The Master of Fear – Rob Baker-Gall
When I heard that this year’s theme was going to be fear itself, I immediately thought of the character of Dr. Jonathan Crane, one of the first villains created by DC Comics way back in 1941. He is one of Batman’s most enduring enemies and a longstanding member of his Rogues Gallery.
Better known to many as Scarecrow, Crane is the self-proclaimed ‘Master of Fear’ and a former professor of psychology who uses a variety of experimental toxins and psychological tactics to exploit the fears and phobias of his victims and adversaries. He does not commit his crimes for wealth, but rather for the thrill and power of terrifying people, as well as to conduct research to further study the effects of fear on humans.
Rather than try to recreate one of the many well-known incarnations of Scarecrow during his incredible 80-year lifetime in print and on screen, I decided to take inspiration from a whole host of sources (including some incredible cosplay artists that I have long admired) to create my own version of the character, while being sure to include some of his most iconic and enduring features, such as his hessian mask and the breathing apparatus that ensures he does not fall foul of his own toxins.
