The ‘Creature’ Under the Bed

When I started this project, I already knew that I didn’t want to go for a typical ‘monster’ – I wanted our ‘creature’ under the bed to veer far more on the side of creepy, rather than horrifying.
I began by looking to the character of Samara from The Ring movies and the witch in the story of Hansel and Gretel, while also just allowing the piece to lead me along somewhat.
While a lot of her was hidden under the bed, she was fully life-size, and those few individuals that were brave enough to crouch down and look her in the face will have seen that her eyes also glowed under the black lights of our bedroom scene.
A relatively late addition to the piece, the ‘cake of skin’ was added as a nod to Cake International itself, as I started to think about what sort of cake would this creature make for the show.
As is often the case with these larger pieces, we definitely went on a bit of a journey together, but I was delighted to be able to contribute something to such an incredible feature.
