Dancing under the Oak tree – Daniel Diéguez

Dancing under the Oak tree.

Lara and Maria were born entwined as siamese twins, destined to always be conjoined as they shared parts of their brain and lungs. Inoperable, their condition was a life sentence yet their mothers love helped them thrive even after the diagnosis that would keep them housebound for the rest of their days. The twins were allergic to sunlight.

Suffering photophobia they were raised like birds in a cage, only allowed outside the house for mere moments after dark. They loved to walk around the flowers but especially loved to play around the oak tree.

It was autumn when they found their freedom. The oak leaves were falling, and the air so pleasant that they spent the night dancing around the tree without thought for the time. Carefree and dizzy, they didn’t realise it was time for the sun to rise. When the first rays of light appeared Lara wanted to run inside the house but Maria was too fascinated to move.

In seconds the pain came, their eyes started to drip blood and it took only minutes for them to die. Maria passed happily, in awe of the beauty of a sunrise but Lara was angry with her sister.

Since then, when the oak leaves fall and the air is mild with magic, Lara and Maria still appear as dancing spirits, around that old oak tree.
